It’s a phrase we use often. “I’m doing well…under the circumstances”. The implication being that whatever is happening in our lives is lowering the ceiling. That there is a maximum closing down on us, shrinking our potential by the moment.

It doesn’t have to be this way. It is only so because we choose it. This mindset is more indicative of our perspective than the circumstances they refer to.

The power of perspective allows us to live over the circumstances. It does not mean the circumstances are not acknowledged and weighed. It just means they are not the sole measure that determines our weight.

The things that happen to us can be messy and sometimes tragic. But there is a force inside us more powerful than experience, more definitive than our situations. The Holy Spirit provides us insight into the identity God has bestowed on us and invites us to see Him more clearly. The circumstances of life provide an opportunity for Jesus to grow us into a holy temple in the Lord.

A true perspective allows us to view any circumstances as a step in this process. That we are being built together by the Spirit into a dwelling of God. That is a context that places all we do above any circumstance.

“Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.”
– Ephesians 2:20-22
