Because we are a people focused on circumstances, we often read this verse with the idea it is saying God will get us out of any circumstance we find ourselves in. That He will provide a way to change, control, or overcome our setting in favor of a better one.
But these verses are about overcoming internal temptation. And the way we overcome the temptations of our flesh is through the power of choice. Not a change in venue. Not a more comfortable circumstance. Always through a choice.
No matter what our situation, we always have a choice. We have the ability to decide whom we are going to serve and what action we are going to take. It may not rescue us from our circumstances, but it will rescue us from the temptation to use our circumstance as an excuse to ruin our character.
Choice is our way out. That is why Paul follows up this famous verse about what we can bear by imploring us to flee from idolatry. Depending on an external power that is not God is idolatry. God has bestowed on us the role of the referee in matters of our own character. We need look nowhere else. The way out is within us. Through the power God has granted each of us, we can make choices that avoid temptation and idolatry. Choices that honor him and serve one another.
“No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”
– 1 Corinthians 10:13-14
