The story of Job is about the Father’s intimate knowledge of one human being: Job. Is Job unique? Not at all. Jesus said that God has such intimate knowledge of each one of us that our very hairs are numbered (Matt 10:30).

It is human nature to try to earn meaning, or to prove our worth through performance. Or perhaps to gain affirmation from others. Or to elevate ourselves above people and make things subservient to our will in order to achieve a desire for validation.

It’s all foolishness. Because worth begins with Him who knows. The One who has our name on His Lips. The One Who numbers our hairs. And no matter what we go through, we can know that He is watching over us.

He is not as obsessed with circumstances as we are. He sees bigger. He is fascinated with our lives, with the choices we make. Circumstances are the opportunity for identity to be made known to God, for His great pleasure. And what pleases God is to see His children pursue what is for their best.

He who knows who we are knows what we can bear. He who loves us knows what is best for us. And He who whispers the beginning will continue his declarations until the very end.

“For I am confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will continue to perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
– Philippians 1:6
