How can we choose a perspective that says ” trials are good because they bring me joy?” That’s what this verse commands. The next set of verses provide an answer: because trials produce enduring faith.
The word translated “perfect” can also be rendered “complete”. Finished. Continuing to believe God has our best interest at heart, and live in His ways no matter the circumstances is the path to become all God made us to be. This is the way to cross the finish line of life a victor.
A few verses later we are promised that Jesus will award the “crown of life” for all those victors who endure in their faith.
The word translated “endurance” can also be translated “patience.” Patience is only possible when our circumstances are annoying. James invites us to choose a perspective that sees opportunity in annoyance.
Faith is a challenging endeavor. There is uncertainty, imperfection, and conviction.
Perseverance is the tool that allows us to transcend the limitations of our own ability and understanding. It allows us to grow, to change, and to see things more truly.
