Discovering Choices

“Your ears will hear a word behind you, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right or to the left.” – Isaiah 30:21

One perspective we can adopt is to view life as a woeful journey, where our primary purpose is avoiding pain.  If we choose this view of life, our radar will stay tuned for anything that might endanger our comfort. Anything that smacks of risk, of turmoil or suffering.

But God is speaking “behind us” as we walk, saying “This is the way, walk in it.” This is active engagement. It is a life that seeks creation over mere consumption. Achievement over comfort. To walk a path rather than to just rest in the shade of a tree. To be actors rather than spectators.

The thing we are meant to be pursuing is Christ and his obedience. To play the part of a faith superhero. To live as new creations in Christ in a manner that spreads life to all around us. To constructively engage circumstances as opportunities.

And the crossroads along the pursuit are our choices.

The first step to making good choices is to look for them. Discover how many opportunities we have to make a decision. We find what we look for. And life is a journey of choices, a maze of decisions.

There are precious few things in this world we can control, a small number of things we are responsible to steward. Let’s not waste time looking for, finding, and lamenting the things of life that we cannot affect. Let’s not live life as a spectator sport.

Rather, let’s adopt a perspective that life is a journey we walk just ahead of our Lord, who is whispering the best way forward in our ear. Today is a good day to note decisions within our control, and make them in listening obedience to our Divine Guide.
