The Bible has multiple references to the people of God as “The Body”. Each of us is a part of that body – a leg or arm or earlobe. We each have our part to play.

Imagine if your body was made up of antagonistic parts. If our leg and eye were at war with one another, it would neutralize our ability to be effective.

Life is a team sport. And to be effective, we need to know our role, play our part well, and rely on our teammates to perform their functions.

Many of us accept this analogy but then wrestle to be the head – the part of the body that tells everyone else what to do. But that’s the one job the Bible makes clear is already filled. Jesus is the head. The only thing that keeps each appendage from making an idol of itself is their dependency and submission to the head.

The truth keeps us in alignment. The Head keeps us connected. It keeps us properly focused. It reminds us that we are in this together and that there is a purpose we can only achieve within community.

“Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.”
