Job has everything and nearly everyone taken from him. Losing all material possessions is a terrible tragedy. Losing most of his family is an even greater tragedy. Job could melt into despair and we would not really blame him.
Instead he continues to have faith. He worships.
How can he do this? By choosing a true perspective. He acknowledges he came into the world with no possessions and when he leaves this world, all his possessions stay behind. Job embraces reality concerning material possessions.
The truth becomes his covering. It is not material possessions or favorable circumstances that clothe Job. It is worship. Trust in the eternal God becomes the clothing of comfort for Job. It sustains him through the darkest valley imaginable.
Thankfully, when we read the book of Job we are shown that through this deep valley, Job’s trust is well placed. God’s favor shines on Job throughout. God has nothing but the best intent for His servant. To make it clear to all this was his intent, God restores Job’s earthly possessions and relationships to double what it was before.
We can cling to the nakedness of trusting in ourselves. God has given us the freedom to choose that option. Much better to be clothed with the glorious and regal garments of trust. Our Creator desires the best for us, and wants us to know him by faith. No one should seek a dark valley, but when they come, we can view them as opportunities to add to our wardrobe.
“Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshipped. And he said: ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.’”
