When we ask a question, we are not always looking for the straightforward answer. We are looking for the answer we want. As children, we have all sorts of ways to try to get the answers we want. We throw a fit. We run to ask the same question of another adult. Or we sprint off in a different direction, distracted by something else that might promise our fleshly desire for satisfaction.

After a while, we start to figure out what works for us and what doesn’t. Which questions elicit the easy answers. Which parent is most likely to give us our way.

We have an incredible opportunity. In all our wanderings, we sometimes forget that we can ask God. We can call to him. What we do instead is call out to the things we want. And on our way to them, we beckon God to follow.

Yet, he is there himself. The perfect parent. Always willing to lend an ear. Full of wisdom and advice. He holds the keys to a treasure chest of wisdom, beauty, and truth. A treasure he is ready to share with us. All we need to do is make the call.

“Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”
– Jeremiah 33:3
