We are motivated by what we believe to be in our best interest. The battle in our inner being is between the flesh and the spirit. But they are both vying for the same treasure – to be the source of our motivation.

James says that desire gives birth to sin and sin, when it is fully developed, leads to death. This is just one of the paths available. The other path also starts with desire. Holy desire. It leads to righteousness, which, when fully developed, leads to abundant life.

The great battle is the battle for our motivation. Will the flesh convince us it is the most trusted path for fulfilling our deep desires or will the spirit convince us that the path of wisdom is ultimately in our own best interest?

Where we set our mind determines our steps. Where we place our trust informs which voice we will listen to and which path our lives will take.

We are the referee in our own hearts. We decide who wins the battle for our desires. Flesh or spirit. And the choice we make will lead us to one or two very different paths. If our foundation is based on a trust that the flesh will be most fulfilling, we will set out mind on the flesh and be governed by it. On the other hand, if we trust in the promises of the spirit and believe that it is not just best but is best FOR US, we will set our mind on the ways of God and be governed by His Spirit within us.

“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
