David Dunn’s new song, “Perspectives” (lyrics below) is about the diverse way people see the world. We all have our opinions, our biases, and our experience to guide how we see things. Each person has a perspective they have to navigate. Some of what we discern is true, some is false, and much is well beyond our capacity.

God transcends it all.

Our circumstances are a whirlwind. Sometimes they allow us to feel as though we have conquered the world and sometimes they make us feel so small and insignificant. They inform our perspective of the world, ourselves, and even God. What we experience, how we feel, and the choices we make mold our ability to perceive the truth.

But we all have this sneaky suspicion that there is more to the world than we understand. More than we can possibly see. There is more happening than the face value of our circumstances, as we perceive it.

When we are distracted by an incomplete perspective, we too often lose sight of God and try to make life fit into the design we have for it. We start to serve our imagined future, our self-talk, and our untrue narratives. We start to believe only in what we see.

But we don’t know all God is up to. We don’t see all the truth He perceives. Only God is God. Our perspectives are imperfect. His is perfection itself. It makes all the sense in the world to place our trust in Him. And maybe, just maybe, he will help make up some of the difference between our perspective and His.

Perspectives

I’ve been way up, been way down

Been king of the world, been laid out

I know what it feels like feels like

Living my life in high and low spaces

All I really know

Is I don’t really know no

All I really know

Is I don’t really know

[Chorus]

You see it all like it’s in slow motion

I see a drop and think I’ve seen the ocean

You hold the world but I can’t hold my own emotions

Maybe I should trust You

You hold it all

[Verse 2]

My hopes up, guard down

Been through enough, to know now

Hindsight in the real life feels like

Sometimes flying and sometimes falling

All I really know

Is You’re my only hope

All I really know

Is You’re my only hope

[Chorus]

You see it all like it’s in slow motion

I see a drop and think I’ve seen the ocean

You hold the world but I can’t hold my own emotions

Maybe I should trust You

You hold it all

[Bridge]

We all have own perspective

It’s a curse and blessing

We all have own perspective

We have ours and You have heaven’s

[Chorus]

You see it all like it’s in slow motion

I see a drop and think I’ve seen the ocean

You hold the world but I can’t hold my own emotions

Maybe I should trust You

You hold it all

You see it all like it’s in slow motion

I see a drop and think I’ve seen the ocean

You hold the world but I can’t hold my own emotions

Maybe I should trust You

You hold it all

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
– 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
